FAQ

Do you have questions about what it is like to be a student at IHS?

You are maybe full of expectations and probably have some questions about what it’s like to be a student here at IHS.

Below you can see the answers to some of the frequently asked questions from current and former students.
Maybe you have been thinking about the answers to some of these questions.

Feel free to contact us if you have other questions or want to ask a completely different question. We always want to chat with you about your wishes and needs in relation to a stay at Sønderborg Sports Folk High School. We are looking forward to hear from you.

HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE WHEN ATTENDING A FOLK HIGH SCHOOL?

Our target group is young people aged 18-24. Most of the students are 19-21 years old.

However, we also often have a group of slightly older students aged 22-26. It is typically students who are taking a break between their undergraduate and graduate degrees, or people with a craftmans background who need to try something new.

If you’re not sure whether you’re too young or too old, give us a call. Together we can sort out the situation.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN MY SCHOOL FEES AND WHAT IS AN ADDITIONAL COST?

Accommodation, food and teaching are included in your school fees. The meals consist of a buffet breakfast, lunch, dinner and three snacks during the day. You will be accommodated in a room with a roomie and have access to shared bathroom and toilet facilities.

NOTE: Some subjects, courses and trips have an additional cost. Read more under the “prices” tab.

What is the typical number of students in a semester?
This can vary slightly, but currently we have between 140 – 170 students each semester.
IS A SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL ONLY FOR SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS?

Absolutely not! Physical education takes up about 50% of our timetable and in addition we have a lot of other subjects and are very much concerned with personal and social development.

We are very good at what we do, but we are not an elite sports organisation. We use sport as a way to achieve something bigger – for example self-confidence and self-esteem.

The vast majority of our students choose a stay at Sønderborg Sports Folk High School to try something new and perhaps start from scratch with a new sport.

HOW IS THE DISTRIBUTION OF GENDER?

It varies a bit, but we strive for a ratio as close to 50/50 as possible. At the moment the ratio is about 50/50.

DO YOU STAY AT THE SCHOOL IN THE WEEKENDS?

You can choose whether you want to stay here at weekends or take a small trip home. But the weekends at IHS are a land of milk and honey and most people don’t go home. Every weekend, a family group, approximately 16 people from the same hall, is responsible for organizing a great programme for the other students. This typically results in lots of cool activities, themes and parties to attend if you wish.

The facilities are free to use as a student, so the weekends are full of funny activities.
